Why buy local flowers?
Maitri Farm is part of the locally grown flower movement, and more broadly, the return of American-grown flowers after a major shift in production to Central+South America in the mid-1990s. Most, if not all, of your local supermarket flowers have been shipped from other countries.
Aside from the carbon footprint of long-distance shipping, these flowers have to be treated with harsh chemicals to survive their journey, and the people that work with those flowers are subject to those chemicals, and less-than-ideal labor practices, too.
The beauty of purchasing fresh, local, organically grown cut flowers - aside from the environmental benefits - is being able to engage with the person who has grown and assembled your flowers, so you can be informed about the business and labor practices you are supporting.
You also enjoy the vitality and progression of a flower that has not been "frozen" by preservatives to ship it hundreds of miles from where it was grown.
Witnessing the flower change each day of its life is an experience in its self.
Thank you for choosing ethically grown flowers.
