Thanks to all who came to our Harvest Celebration—it was wonderful to see so many new friends and we always love sharing this beautiful spot we have here... For those who couldn't make it, we'll simply bring the harvest celebration to you! October is the last month of our CSA, so you can expect harvest-season favorites such as winter squash coming every week!
It's been a great season so far, and it's hard to believe it's almost over... We're expecting our first frost this coming weekend, but we were ready for one starting in mid-September, so it's actually been a very mild fall so far. Frost doesn't mean the end of fresh greens, carrots, or broccoli, though—this week we'll bring back the row covers that we used in spring to protect our crops against fully freezing, and many of our fall vegetables (kale, for instance), do perfectly well even in temperatures slightly below freezing. In fact, many vegetables like spinach, kale, or broccoli, taste sweeter when they've been exposed to cold temperatures! Just like we add anti-freeze to a car, these plants add more sugar to their chemical makeup to prevent the water in them from freezing. Delicious, delicious chemistry...
